We
all know the popular saying that says that Nigerians are the happiest people on
earth, but how true is this? Are we truly happy, can we boldly say we are happy
people, is there true joy in the face of the hardship and poverty that stares
us in the face, how much joy we have with so much unemployment, so much insecurity
and fear of what tomorrow will bring?
How
many souls have we lost to terrorism, bad roads, inadequate health care
facilities, all these woes lays at our fate on a daily bases and we have to
embrace it because we have nowhere else to go, after all Nigeria is our home,
will there ever be light at the end of the tunnel for Nigerians, are we ever
going to be truly happy people again? How many of us have had to go to bed at night
and think if things were different ,if the system worked well enough, I would
not have to lose a loved one to insecurity, bad roads, lack of proper health
care, or even the ability to put food on our tables .
the great writer Dele Momodu said about us, we have developed thick such skins
that nothing moves us as long as the catastrophe has not touched his directly, so
Nigerians, is it until there is no one else left before our change will come? Where
is the Nigerian spirit known all over the world for thriving even in most
difficult situations? Maybe where our strength lies is where are weakness also reside,
our ability to swallow any bitter pill has made us immune to terrible conditions
When
is the wind of change going to blow and liberate my people? When is this
vicious cycle going to end? Are Nigerians truly happy people? These and more
are my thought about the plight of Nigeria.
